HUGS matches sponsors with young people in Uganda to enable them to attend vocational school. With basic skills such carpentry or tailoring,
these young people can become gainfully employed, support their families, and begin to reverse the cycle of poverty.
HUGS helps support a pioneering effort by the Kisakye Isaac Memorial School to bring education to children with physical and mental disabilities in a region
where special education is unheard of.
Hope for Ugandan Students (HUGS) was founded by a group of people who have been volunteers in Eastern Uganda. Each of us was
inspired - by the warmth and kindness of the people who welcomed us into their modest homes, by the abject poverty in which most
live, by the willingness of very poor people to take in orphaned and elderly extended family members, and by the lively and hopeful
spirit of people who have so little in terms of material means.
We use what we've learned about the needs of people in Uganda to continue our work there through HUGS, a U.S. based 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization, and a grassroots organization in Uganda called
Foundation for Development of Needy Communities (FDNC).
